All about me.
A little bit about me...
I've been making miniatures for about nine years. People always ask me how I began making miniatures; it was really just a natural thing for me to do. Creating seems to be in my blood. My dad is a mechanical engineer, my mom is a quilter (and bearmaker), and my brother a mechanical engineer, who makes World War Two dioramas. As for me, I’ve always loved to make crafts, whether from cloth, clay, Legos, wood, plastic, or metal. I’ve always had a special liking for small toys or figurines. Also, stuffed animals always were (and still are) my favorite toys. Whenever I go to a store, I instinctively locate the stuffed animal section. It seems only natural that my three favorites; creating, miniatures, and toy animals, eventually merged.
Granted, I didn’t begin with miniatures. My first two bears were larger and I still do make larger animals from time to time. I made my first teddy bear at about age nine or ten. I sat down with some fabric scraps and a bear my mom had made. Then I drew a pattern by looking at the bear and Mom helped me sew the pieces together. It was somewhat crude looking, but definitely a bear. A couple of years later, when I was twelve, I was flipping through a teddy bear book and saw some patterns for miniature bears. I looked at them, decided “Well, I can do that,” and did. Mom bought me a book by Debbie Kesling, and I was hooked.
I believe the most important part of any animal is the face. When I was younger and choosing a toy animal from the store, I would find every single one in the entire store and compare all of their faces until I found the one with the best face. I pay great attention to giving my animals the best expressions I can. Each one has his or her unique personality.
Of course, making bears (or other animals) isn’t all I do. I am currently a university student, and I should graduate next spring with a major in biology and a minor in earth/space science. After that, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in paleontology. I am generally pretty busy with school stuff, but I'm hoping that my schedule will soon calm down enough for me to get back to making bears (and other animals). To help me get back on track with the bear world, I've been told that I really need to start a blog, so I have, and we'll see how this works out. :) katrinasartisticadventures.blogspot.com
